A partnership between the transportation and warehouse company L.C. Howard Inc., Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo Valley Community College, and Urban Alliance is opening the Urban Alliance Technical Center at 400 Island Avenue, off Riverview Drive in Parchment, in early 2018.

There’s a grassroots group in Kalamazoo’s Edison Neighborhood gaining national attention for its success finding employment for harder-to-place job seekers, like ex-offenders, those with disabilities and single mothers re-entering the workforce. Momentum Urban Employment Initiative was founded four years ago this October. Ninety-three percent of its participants get full-time jobs, officials say.

WMU launches supply chain academies in new tech center

The WMU Bronco Force team will support the Urban Alliance initiative by providing the design, layout and operation of the warehouse and related logistics activities. Along with WMU integrated supply management faculty and industry partners, WMU students will help teach the academy curriculum, which has been developed by WMU’s Center for Integrated Supply Management.

The warehouse, which is a joint venture between the Integrated Supply Management (ISM) program at Western Michigan University (WMU) and the nonprofit employment-skills organization Urban Alliance, will house two supply chain “academies”—one focused on warehousing and the other on inventory control. The academies will teach unemployed and underemployed residents from the Kalamazoo area the skills they need to work for local warehousing and logistics companies. Simultaneously it will provide WMU students with an opportunity to learn how to manage and work with an entry-level workforce.

To date, Momentum has run six similarly developed training academies in partnership with Kalamazoo Valley Community College. This will be the first Collaboration with WMU. Urban Alliance plans to host several new academies out of their new center, as well as, provide additional supports to its 55 partner employers that comprise the Momentum Business Network.

The Kalamazoo-based Urban Alliance will open the Urban Alliance Technical Training Center as a vehicle for accelerated employment training for inner city residents in the skilled trades and technical fields. The new campus is scheduled to open in late fall and will be located at 400 Island Drive, Parchment.
